The invention relates to a flow meter and, particularly, a float-type flow meter, with a magnetic device, the position of which can be influenced by the fluid flow relative to a reference plane. Furthermore, the flow meter exhibits a detector which detects a relative change of the magnetic device with respect to the reference plane and generates at its output an electric signal representative of the relative change. Previous flow meters of this type did not achieve good response sensitivity and, on the other hand, were relatively susceptible to malfunction. According to the invention, these disadvantages are eliminated by the fact that the detector has at least one magnetic field probe, possibly defining a reference plane, and that the output signals of the magnetic field probe are supplied to an evaluating circuit, in which arrangement the signal levels can be associated directly or indirectly with a position and/or a direction of movement of the magnetic device.
