Method and apparatus for the tying of articles, a predetermined load being exerted on an article before the article to be tied is secured in order to hold the article together. The disclosed apparatus is provided with means for controlling the driving force which is used to exert the pressing force on the article before the tying. In the preferred embodiment, an electric motor is mounted in the frame which allows a relative displacement of the motor in relation to the frame of the tying mechanism, the said displacement being brought about by the rotary reaction force of the motor which exerts the pressing force on the article before the tying. The amount of displacement of the motor relative to the stationary frame is sensed by an electrical device, the output signal of which is compared with a predetermined value of the desired pressing force, the action of the motor being switched when a predetermined force is reached.
