The invention relates to a method of producing compacted coal pellets having improved physical properties, the coal being subjected to a shearing and a tridgerating stage followed by extrusion and drying stages. The method is characterised in that an additive is incorporated in the coal which is subjected to the shearing and tridgerating stage, the additive being selected from one or more constituents of the following group: Alkali-metal hydroxides, Alkaline-earth-metal hydroxides Ammonium hydroxide, alkali metal carbonates, Alkaline-earth-metal carbonates, Oxides of base metals, Oxides of transition metals and Carbonyl compounds having small molecules.
