A description is given of a hand-guided belt grinder having a housing (11), a first and a second belt roller (22, 23) on which an abrasive belt (24) can be provided, a drive motor (16) arranged above the abrasive belt (24), and a multistep gear mechanism (25) which is arranged laterally in the housing (11) and transmits the power of the drive motor (16) to a belt roller (23), the first step of the gear mechanism (25) comprising a first and a second crown gear (31, 33) which are connected via a toothed belt (32), and the first crown gear (31) resting coaxially on the motor shaft (17). In order to achieve compact construction of said grinder, with good control of the abrasive belt, it is proposed that the drive motor (16) be arranged in the longitudinal direction above the abrasive belt (24) and the second crown gear (33) be connected coaxially to a worm (34) which is in positive engagement with an oblique-teeth cylindrical gear (35) which corresponds to the worm (34) and is arranged coaxially on the axis (36) of rotation of a belt roller (23). <IMAGE>
