PURPOSE:To record and reproduce optically with a recording medium having an excellent shelf life by subjecting a recording layer consisting of a polymer to corona, electrification, writing recording information with the irradiation of light or heat, arranging a ferroelectric liq. crystal close to the written recording layer, and reading the variations of the refractive index to light. CONSTITUTION:An optical recording medium is formed by a supporting substrate (b) and a recording layer (a) consisting of a polymer on the substrate (b). The recording layer (a) is corona-electrified and then irradiated with light or heat to form an electret, and hence the recording information is written. A ferroelectric liq. crystal is arranged close to the recording layer (a) of the optical recording medium on which the recording information is written as an electret, and reading light is irradiated on the liq. crystal. The resulting variations of the refractive index is then read to read the electret of the recording layer as the recorded information. Consequently, the reading precision is high, the damage of records due to the physical and chemical effect from the outside is reduced, and information is written on and read from the recording layer having an excellent shelf life. |
