PURPOSE:To carry out efficiently the surface hardening of a case hardening steel at a high temp. in a short time by adding specified amounts of S and/or Te as trace impurities. CONSTITUTION:A case hardening steel consisting of C, Si, Mn, proper alloying elements and the balance Fe with impurities can be heated at a high temp. in a short time without coarsening the grains by adding >=0.01wt% S and/or >=0.01wt% Te as impurties, and a case hardening steel capable of efficiently undergoing surface hardening is obtd.
