PURPOSE:To expand a visual angle range, and to display an image with a high contrast by superposing at least two or more cell units formed by laminating successively a liquid crystal cell and a polarizing plate whose visual angle characteristics are different from each other, and also providing a fluorescent material layer for emitting a fluorescence to one of the polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:The first cell unit 23 and the second cell unit 25 are laminated on the rear side of a polarizing plate 21 of the surface side having an adsorption axis 11. The first cell unit 23 is formed by laminating the first liquid crystal cell 13a and the first polarizing plate 15a, and the second cell unit 25 is also constituted of the second liquid crystal cell 13b and the second polarizing plate 15b in the same way. As for each cell unit, a light which is made incident on the liquid crystal cell of the cell unit through the polarizing plate of the lower side passes through the polarizing plate of the upper side since a rotation of a polarization axis occurs when a signal is off, and on the other hand, the light is cut off by the polarizating plate of the upper side since the polarization axis is not rotated by the liquid crystal cell when the signal is on. By laminating plural liquid crystal sells having visual angle characteristics for compensating each other, and driving them so that each liquid crystal cell displays the same image pattern substantially, a visual angle range of a high contrast ratio can be expanded. |
