Intermittently operated compressed air appts. includes a drying cartridge (5) in a circuit with pressure reguor and control valve, together with a sensor (15) for measuring moisture content of stored compressed air. During a period of compressor inactivity, regeneration of the cartridge by throttled air flow is electronically initiated. A further signal indicates when the moisture contene exceeds a threshold valve. If regeneration of the drying cartridge is invariably signalled as necessary during a set number of successive compressor inactivity phases, the electronic evaluation system emits a signal showing the cartridge has become exhausted and needs replacement.
