PURPOSE:To provide a centering function to gas floating and supporting devices by arranging many pieces of the gas floating and supporting devices which float and move a belt-like body and inclining alternately backward these devices with respect to the transverse direction of the traveling belt-like body. CONSTITUTION:Each of the gas floating and supporting devices is constituted of a floater 4 (4A, 4B, 4C), a gas duct 5 and a slit 9 and many pieces of such devices are arranged in the traveling direction of the strip 1. The floaters 4A, 4C thereof are inclined so as to decline toward the transverse direction (a) side of the strip 1 with respect to the horizontal plane and the floater 4B is inclined so as to decline toward the transverse direction (b) side. The floaters 4 are thus alternately inclined in the opposite directions. Gaseous NH is supplied from ducts 5 to the strip 1 in this state and is ejected through slits 9 to float the strip 1, by which the position of the strip 1 in the transverse direction is controlled.
