PURPOSE:To improve the front contrast by providing a phase difference plate between two pieces of upper and lower polarizing plates of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION:Two pieces of upper and lower polarizing plates of a liquid crystal cell which has enclosed a nematic liquid crystal between upper and lower transparent substrates to which a roughly orthogonal orientation processing is performed are placed by making an absorption axis parallel roughly, and a phase difference plate is provided between two pieces of polarizing plates. A liquid crystal molecule 5 is oriented forcibly in the direction as indicated with an arrow by an orientation processing which is performed to an oriented film 3, the orientation processing of an oriented film 2 is intersected orthogonally within the range of + or -10 deg. with the oriented film 3, and the Z' axis of the oriented film 2 is intersected orthogonally within the range of + or -10 deg. with the Z' axis of the oriented film 3. As for a lower polarizing plate 6, its absorption axis is provided in parallel within the range of + or -20 deg. to the bearing of the Z' axis of a lower substrate B, and the absorption axis of an upper polarizing plate 7 becomes parallel within the range of + or -20 deg. to the Z' axis of the lower substrate B. The Z' axis of a phase difference plate 9 divides an angle made by the oriented film 2 and the absorption axis of the upper polarizing plate 7, into two equal parts within the range of + or -5 deg.. |
