PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance having remarkably improved water- absorption of pure water and an aqueous solution containing salt, and the water- absorption after heat-treatment, by copolymerizing acrylonitrile with a specific monomer at a specific ratio, and saponifying the copolymer with an alkali. CONSTITUTION:The objective substance can be proudced by (1) copolymerizing (A) acrylonitrile with (B) the monomer of formula (X is H or methyl; when X is H, Y is phenyl, acetoxyl, etc., and when X is methyl, Y is alkoxycarbonyl having 1-18C alkoxy group) by conventional method such as aqueous solution polymerization, using <=20mol%, preferably <=15mol% component B based on the sum of the components A and B, and (2) saponifying the obtained copolymer with an alkali. The component B is preferably styrene, methyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate.
