PURPOSE:To produce a ruby having high quality and free from foreign materials such as bubbles, at a low cost, by using a raw material rod composed mainly of Al2O3 and containing a specific amount of Cr2O3, and synthesizing the ruby by focused light floating zone process. CONSTITUTION:Al2O3 produced by the hydrolysis of an organic aluminum compound is mixed with an organic chromium compound, and the mixture is filled in a rubber tube, formed, and calcined to obtain a raw material rod. The chromium compound is weighed to give a Cr content of 5-10wt% in terms of Cr2O3 based on Al2O3. The objective ruby can be synthesized by focused light floating zone process using the rod as a raw material. A high-quality ruby free from foreign materials such as bubbles can be produced at a low cost. |
