In a yarn processing machine - for example a false-twist crimping machine - in which a plurality of yarns, spaced apart lengthwise of the machine are passed in a first direction to a heating apparatus, the yarn paths in the heating apparatus are inclined to the first direction and lie generally in a plane extending lengthwise of the machine. The heating apparatus may comprise a plurality of inclined heater plates, each having two grooves in a convexly curved surface, one groove for each yarn, and the plates being heated by electric resistances, or a plurality of straight or curved tubes, or channel members of semi-circular, semi-elliptical, or trapezoidal cross-section and nesting together but leaving a yarn threading gap between each channel member, with the electric heating current passing through the tubes or channel members. In the embodiment illustrated yarns 11 pass along inclined grooves 23 in the semi-cylindrical surface of plate 22 to guide pins 32 and back along further grooves 23 inclined in the opposite direction to guide pins 47. The plate is heated by resistances 18 thermostatically controlled. Guides 27 and 31 are adjustably mounted to vary the length of yarn in contact with the heater. A layer of thermal insulating material is secured between heater plate 22 and its support. The apparatus may alternatively be heated by a liquid or condensable vapour.</p> |
