A mfg. process and a machine for the prodn. of cakes of cereal which is cooked under pressure in a mould and then allowed to expand. A mould cavity charged with cereal is closed by entry of a ram under the pressing mechanism so that expansion of the cereal as cooked can freely displace the ram to a position which accepts the expansion. The ram is held temporarily in this position. The ram is then fully retracted to demould the prod. The pressing mechanism re-engages the ram at the position of expanded prod. and fully retracts the ram to the demoulding position. The pressing mechanism comprises an hydraulic cylinder of which the piston rod can apply pressure to the apex pivot of a toggle linkage having one leg fixed to the machine frame and the other to the moulding ram. The piston rod coupling to the apex pivot allows the cylinder to take the toggle linkage slightly over dead centre alignment for full entry of the ram onto the mould. The piston rod then slides freely back through the coupling block to a limited extent equal to the free movement required when the ram is displaced by expansion of the cereal. |
