PURPOSE:To improve the wear resistance of a metallic surface and to increase the hardness by placing silicon nitride ceramic particles on a metallic surface and treating them at a high temp. in vacuum. CONSTITUTION:Silicon nitride ceramic particle are placed on the metallic surface reacting readily with silicon, and they are kept at >=1,200 deg.C in vacuum of >=1X10<-3>Torr degree of vacuum to dissociate the surfaces of the silicon nitride ceramic particles. Silicon produced by the dissociation reacts readily with the metal to form a reaction product, and the silicon nitride ceramics is fixed and joined to the metallic surface with the reaction product in-between.
