An assembly for inserting and locking in known orientation an endoscope through a cannula into a body comprises formations on endoscope and cannula to control rotational orientation and axial position, and including a on one engaging a guide surface on the other. - A spring-biased locking member restrains the protrusion in a desired axial position and includes a can surface moving against the protrusion as the endoscope is inserted. The cam surface moves out of the way as the endoscope is inserted.
