Prodn. of esters (I) comprises direct reaction of diethylene glycol (DEG) with an acid of formula (II), or its Na or K salts. n = 0 or 1; R1 = H, Cl or Me; R2 = H, CF3 or Me; R3 = H or Cl. Reaction is pref. in presence of SOCl2 at room temp. to 100 deg. C. 2-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)ethyl 2-(2,6-dichlorophenylamino) phenylacetate (Ia) is a new cpd. - Pref. (II) have (1) R1 = R3 = Cl; R2 = H; n = 1; (2) R1 = R3 = H; R2 = CF3; n = O; (3) R1 = R3 = Cl; R2 = Me; N = O; (4) R1 = R2 = Me; R3 = H; n = O. SOCl2 is used in a stoichiometric, or slightly higher, amt. relative to (II).
