High strength, high modulus filaments are produced from an aromatic polyamide with chain extending bonds which are coaxial or parallel and oppositely directed and an inherent viscosity of at least 4.0 by: (a) delivering uniform amounts of an anisotropic soln. of at least 30g polyamide in 100 ml 98.0-100.2% sulphuric acid to uniform size apertures in a spinneret plate; (b) extruding the anisotropic soln. downward through the apertures forming a single vertical warp and vertically downward through a uniformly thick layer of noncoagulating fluid; and (c) passing the extruded anisotropic soln. vertically downward into a gravity accelerated and free falling coagulating liq..
