PT--81641 A 5-Acetyl 3-(1-((3-amino 4-hydroxy phenyl) amino) ethylidene) 4-hydroxy 2H-pyrane 2,6(3H)-dione of formula (I) is made by reaction of a phosphinimine, obtained by reaction of 4-hydroxy 3-nitro phenyl azide and triphenyl phosphine, with 3,5-diacetyl 4,6-dihydroxy 2H-pyran-2-one. The pyrenamine formed is subsequently reduced to give (I).
