C Blocks are calcined into bodies, esp. anodes, by: inserting them into a container so that there is a gap between the blocks and at least most of the container internal surface; closing the container; and placing it in a furnace, as either a continuous or batch process. - Pref. the container has internal protective layers on at least some internal surfaces forming a gas-tight impermeable barrier. Pref. the layers are of C powder material, more pref. with the powder arranged in hollow refractory wall elements.
