PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance excelling in thermomagnetic properties, thermal conductivity, and workability by using a sintered body in which at least one kind among rare earth elements from La to Yb of the periodic table of the elements and Y is incorporated to a specific quantity of Ni. CONSTITUTION:An alloy consisting of 55-65wt% of at least one kind among rare earth elements from La to Yb of the periodic table and Y and the balance essentially Ni is manufactured, which is ground into fine grains of about 1-10mu. The fine grains are compacted into desired shape and the resulting green compact is sintered at about 850-1,150 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. In this way, a dense sintered compact having >= about 80% filling rate, >=8g/cm<3> density and >= about 99% maximum filling rate, which is suitable for use as magnetic working substance for magnetic refrigeration, can be obtained.
