The cpd. of formula (I) is obtd. by (a) treating cystamine hydrochloride with N-cyano N'-propargyl ethylsulphenyl form-amidine in presence of an organic base e.g. triethylamine or pyridine, in a solvent, e.g. acetonitrile, nitromethane or DMF, to form N-cyano N'-(2-mercapto ethyl) N''-propargyl-guanidine; and (b) reacting this with 4-hydroxymethyl 5-1H-imidazole, in presence of a Lewis acid, e.g. BF3 Et2, AlCl3 or ZnI2, in a halogenated alkyl solvent, e.g. CH2Cl2 or CHCl3.
