PURPOSE:To automate the test of a spiral spring by converting a spiral spring shape into a picture signal. CONSTITUTION:An analog picture signal of the spiral spring photographed by a projector of a picture input device 1 is led into an A/D converter 2 and converted into a digital signal having plural gradations and the digital signal is inputted to a picture storage 3. Then, the center point of the picture is detected by a center point detecting means on the basis of the gradation stored in each picture element, and on the basis of the center point data, the outline of the picture is extracted by an outline extracting means 5. An angle theta and a distance (r) around the center of the spiral spring are calculated by a polar coordinate operating means 6 on the basis of the extracted data and the positions of the end parts of hook parts on both the end parts of the spiral spring are detected by a leading end part detecting means 7. Then, the diameter of an inner hook opening and an inner hook length are calculated by a specified distance operating means 8. The calculated value to be tested is decided by a legality deciding means 9 to attain quality control.
