NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I {R1 and R2 are lower alkyl, or R1 and R2 are linked to form -(CH2)5; R3 is -OR4 (R4 is H, or lower alkyl), -NH2, -OM[M is alkaline(earth)metaml, or formula II (R5 and R6 are R4)} and its salt. EXAMPLE:2-(5-Isopropyl-5-methyl-4-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)cycloh-ex-ene- carboxylic acid ethyl ester. USE:A herbicide having wide herbicidal spectrum, showing improved herbicidal activity, providing crops with no phytotoxicity, effective by soil treatment and foliar treatment as well. PREPARATION:3,4,5,6-Tetrahydrophthalic anhydride is reacted with an aminonitrile derivative shown by the formula III to form a compound shown by the formula IV, which is then hydrolyzed to give an acid amide shown by the formula V, and subjected to ring closure reaction to give a compound shown by the formula VI, which is further hydrolyzed to give a compound shown by the formula I.
