PURPOSE:To produce a fraction rich in 2,2,3-trimethylpentane useful as a base for high octane gasoline, in high yield, by the catalytic reaction of a butene with isobutane in the present of an extremely strongly acidic zirconia catalyst under specific temperature and pressure condition. CONSTITUTION:A fraction rich in 2,2,3-trimethylpentane can be produced econom ically, without causing the corrosion of the apparatus, using a highly active catalyst, by reacting a butene with isobutane at a molar ratio of preferably 1-1/1000 under 0-50kg/cm<2> pressure at -20-+10 deg.C, in the presence of an extremely strongly acidic zirconia catalyst, especially a solid acid catalyst having an acid strength H0 of stronger than -10.6 and produced by contacting zirconium hydroxide or zirconium oxide with a solution containing sulfate radical, and calcining the product. |
