PURPOSE:To make it possible to recover and reuse easily a catalyst and improve the yield without forming harmful by-products, by using a specific zeolite as a catalyst in chlorinating benzene or chlorobenzene to give the titled substance useful as an insect repellent or reaction medium, etc. CONSTITUTION:Benzene or chlorobenzene is chlorinated with chlorine in the presence of a mordenite type zeolite as a catalyst generally at about 5-80 deg.C, preferably about 50-75 deg.C to give the aimed compound. Benzene is preferably used as a raw material from the viewpoint of economic advantage. Preferably, the benzene or chlorobenzene is dehydrated with a dehydrating agent, etc., to reduce the moisture content to <=50ppm for use. The above-mentioned catalyst is one of crystalline aluminosilicate compounds and a molecular sieve having a regular and definite diameter and tunnels and holes of uniform mechanism. the amount to be used is preferably 1-10wt.% based on the benzene. |
