The article contains, as base material, a thermally stable substrate, such as brass, stainless steel, nickel silver (nickel brass) and alloys thereof. The substrate is preferably provided with a coating of chromium and/or nickel. As gold-coloured, decorative coating, the article has a zirconium nitride coating with a thickness of 0.1 to 2 mu m and a gold-containing top coating, for example gold, a gold alloy or a gold-containing mixture, thereon with a thickness of from 0.01 to 1 mu m. During application of the coating, it is possible for the decorative effect to be lost due to gas expelled from the substrate or due to impurities. However, since the coating of zirconium nitride and gold can be removed again, any loss of the basic articles, which are expensive per se, due to faulty coating is reduced to a minimum.
