Device and method for the preheating of parts of an internal combustion engine by utilising the heat of reaction of a solid reaction medium and a working medium. The heat of reaction is transmitted to the engine parts to be heated by evaporation and subsequent condensation of a certain amount of working medium. For subsequent separation of the reacting agents, heat from the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is used. Zeolites are suitable as reaction media and ammonia or water with antifreeze as working media. By means of a special flow control of the working medium vehicle parts which have no influence on the warm-up phase and some of the reaction medium are cooled to less than the ambient temperature. The amount of heat thereby obtained is transformed to a high temperature by the device and transmitted to other engine parts. The required amount of the reacting agents can thereby be reduced.
