The invention relates to a water trough for fighting coal-dust explosions and/or fire-damp explosions in underground operations. The water trough is closed with a lid and can be put into a frame or the like fastened to the support or can be set up on the frame. In order to create a water trough of the aforesaid type, the filling of which is protected against evaporation even over a comparatively long period of time and the high response sensitivity and easy destructibility of which is in no way impaired by a construction protected against evaporation, it is proposed according to the invention that the water trough (1) be provided with an encircling channel (4) in the area of the top ends of its walls (3), which channel (4) adjoins the latter and into which the encircling margin (5) of the lid (2) extends, the channel (4) being filled with a non-evaporating liquid (6), paste or the like. <IMAGE>
