[Also in Division B3] A method of mounting a metal sheet 8 on a supporting structure 5 comprises fixing a nut 3 to the structure 5, attaching the sheet loosely by a bolt 9 passing through a clearance hole 7 in the sheet so that lateral movement of the sheet is not prevented, fastening the edges of the sheet to one or more adjacent members, tightening the bolt to prevent lateral shifting of the sheet, and then sealing the hole 7 in the sheet. The nut 3 is first welded at 4 to a copper-lined plate 2 which is fixed by screws to the wooden structure 5. When the bolts 9 are tightened, they form, with their flanged heads, depressions 23 in the sheets above recesses 12 in the plates 2. Reference is also made to the use of a shoulder or lip (not shown) in addition to the bolt flange 10. The periphery of the bolt flange 10 is then welded, brazed or soldered at 13 to the sheet, sealing the bolt-hole 7, the welding equipment being centred in a depression 14 in the bolt head. In a modification, Fig. 5, a washer 16 is used beneath the bolt-head and the bolt-hole is sealed by a cap 17 formed with flats, Fig. 4 (not shown), matching those on the bolt-head, and with a flange welded at 20 to the sheet. In a further form, Fig. 7, the nut 3 is welded to a steel plate 29 and a stainless-steel reinforcing plate 24 is welded to the stainless steel sheet 8. A washer 16 is placed beneath the bolt-head, which is surrounded by a collar welded to the plate 24. The bolt-hole is sealed by a plug 31 welded to the end of the collar and having a locking projection 28 bearing against a flat on the bolt-head. |
