A fork-lift battery truck has a traction motor 1, and a lift-pump 11 is adapted to be driven by machines 3, 5, which are mechanically coupled together and are each capable of functioning as either a motor or a generator. For starting the traction motor, the machine 3 opposes the voltage of battery 2, the excitation of field winding 4 being gradually reduced. The machine 3 is short-circuited at the end of the starting period. When both the machines 3, 5 are driving the pump 11, the traction motor is short-circuited. The machines 3, 5 may be enclosed in the same casing. |
