Polymers of ketenes of the general formula R2C=C=O, where R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl, or an alkyl-aryl group are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a compound of the general formula AlR1nXm, where R1 represents an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, or alkoxy group or a hydrogen atom, X is a halogen atom, m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and n is (3-m), or an organometallic compound of a metal of Group II of the Mendeleef Periodic Table, and a solvent comprising nitrobenzene, dichloromethane, 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, or 1,1-dichloroethylene. The solvent may be admixed with carbon tetrachloride, toluene, or chloroform. The ketene exemplified is dimethylketene, and the catalyst aluminium tribromide, and aluminium dichloromonoethyl. The polymer is fractionated by solvent extraction.
