A circuit arrangement is described for switching lamps over in an interruption-free manner, especially in the display panel of a car radio, which circuit arrangement makes it possible to display a new state (for example frequency and/or colour) immediately in a simple but effective and power-saving manner. This is achieved in that a preheating voltage is supplied to the lamps which are not activated in each case, via a controllable switching stage which is connected to a driver stage, while the other lamps are just activated, and in that, furthermore, the lamps are connected in series. In consequence, the lamps are switched over in an interruption-free manner, especially display illuminations for frequency and/or colour, in conjunction with wavebands which are set on a car radio, no heating problems occurring, either, as a result of the use of only one circuit. In addition, the voltage of the illumination device which is not switched on completely is used for the second illumination device. As a result of the immediate illumination of the new state, the car driver is diverted from the traffic situation for only a very brief time and does not adversely affect road safety.
