The invention relates to an automatic transmission in which a four-part two-stage torque converter with a turbine, a pump, a first stator and a second stator are combined with a change-speed gearbox which has a planetary gear set, formed by first and second planet gears with a common planet carrier, and a clutch or brake for the control of the planetary gear set. According to the characterising features of this transmission, the turbine of the torque converter is coupled to the turbine shaft which transmits the power from the turbine to the change-speed gearbox. A first stator is arranged on the turbine side, between the turbine and the pump, and connected to the first stator shaft, which transmits the power from the first stator to the change-speed gearbox, specifically via a one-way clutch which transmits power only in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the pump. A second stator is arranged on the pump side, between the turbine and the pump, and connected via a second stator shaft to a casing, the second stator shaft having a one-way clutch which transmits power only in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the pump.
