A hollow body, for example a container, with an axially aligned wall comprising an oriented and/or crystallised plastic is manufactured in that a tubular pre-form 10d is fixed in a peripheral area 13d at the mouth edge 14d of the pre-form between mechanical shaping elements 30, 40, following which the said elements, during continued clamping of the peripheral area, are displaced in the axial direction of the pre-form relative to a mandrel 50. As a result the mandrel 50 is displaced in the pre-form, at the same time widening this out, and the material is oriented and/or crystallised. In a preferred embodiment a certain compensation is made for the tensile forces that occur in the material when inserting the mandrel, by applying a force to the base of the pre-form by means of a base support 75. <IMAGE>
