In a chain hoist which consists of a drive motor, a gear unit with at least two gear stages, a sprocket wheel connected to the output shaft of the gear unit, and a chain running over the sprocket wheel and in a chain guide and having a load hook, a conventional, inexpensive geared motor can be used owing to the fact that the gear casing is flange-mounted with its output side to the drive side of the motor, the drive shaft of the motor is passed through the output shaft of the gear unit to the first gear stage lying on the other side of the motor, and the sprocket wheel is arranged approximately in the axis of gravity of motor and gear unit.
