For ease of assembly of a camshaft (5), serving to control the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine, in a cylinder head (1) with one-piece shaft oil seal bearings (8, 9) in its end walls (3, 4), the camshaft (5) extends only inside the space between the end walls (3, 4); a drive gear (20) for the camshaft (5) passes through from outside with a hub (24) of one of the shaft oil seal bearings (8) and is rotationally fixed to the camshaft (5) by fasteners (26) which are accessible after positioning of the camshaft (5) and drive gear (20). The camshaft (5) is supported in split camshaft bearings (12, 13, 14), so that they can be inserted from above before the fitting of associated bearing caps (15, 16, 17). <IMAGE>
