The mixed building waste is fed from a flat bunker (1) via a conveying system (3, 6) to a first treatment station (2) with a rotating sieve drum (8) in which a fine fraction and a coarse fraction are sieved out as sieve underflow. The sieve overflow out of the drum (8) is fed to a second treatment station (23) which is constructed as a manual picking section and in which two or more material types, e.g. wood, iron and combustible material are sorted from the sieve overflow into corresponding bunkers (24, 25, 26) whilst the residual fraction contains larger parts than the coarse fraction. The fine fraction and coarse fraction, the latter after removal of the iron metals, and the residual fraction are taken to the dump. These portions constitute only approximately one third of the entire mixed building waste. As a result, it is achieved that existing dumps can be operated for substantially longer. On the other hand, the system is of simple configuration so that the operation can be carried out economically taking into account the yields of the portions no longer to be stored on the dump.

|
