PURPOSE:To reduce the gelation rate of negative electrode zinc thus to achieve low contamination by employing zinc alloy containing specific metal as the negative electrode active substance. CONSTITUTION:Zinc alloy containing 0.01-0.5wt% of nickel, 0.01-0.5wt% of lead and 0.01-0.5wt% of cadmium is employed in the negative electrode of so-called zinc alkaline cell employing alkaline aqueous solution mainly com posed of caustic potash, caustic soda as the electrolyte, zinc as the negative electrode active substance, manganese dioxide, silver oxide, mercury oxide, oxygen, etc. as the positive electrode active substance. The solubility of Ni into zinc is low but the cooling speed when powdering is quite high, thereby Ni and zinc may be fused in case of zinc alloy having proper content. Conse quently, when gelatinizing zinc alloy from the surface, Ni having low affinity with mercury will suppress dispersion of mercury into the crystal thus maintain the mercury concentration on the surface of zinc alloy at high level. Consequent ly, gelation rate of negative electrode zinc can be reduced resulting in a low contamination zinc alkaline cell. |
