ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL FOR DETERMINING A PARTICULAR COMPONENT OF A FLUID

An electrochemical cell for determining oxygen or another component of a gaseous or a liquid fluid comprises a semiconductive substrate (9) supporting at least a cathode layer (20). The cathode (20) and the substrate (9) are covered by a thin layer (12) of a hydrophilic polymer matrix which is separated from the fluid by means of a selectively permeable membrane (13). A portion (14) of the polymer layer projects into an electrolyte compartment (4) so that the electrolyte (4) by means of the capillary action of the polymer layer (12) can enter the space around cathode (20). An anode (10) might be provided either on the substrate (9) or a separate anode (11a) can be located within the electrolyte compartment (4). A temperature sensor (15) and/or a current amplifier and impedance converter may be integrated into substrate (9) which also carries connectors (16) for an electrical cable (17).
