PURPOSE:To obtain a thin film magnetic head of magneto-resistance effect (MR) type which excels in the magnetic characteristics and can be produced easily, by forming a head substrate and the barber ball electrodes formed on said substrate at the same level and then forming an MR element on the surfaces of said barbar ball electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The barber ball electrodes 26 are formed in lamination on the surface of a head substrate 25, and an insulated material 27 is formed on these electrodes 26 by a thin film forming process like vapor deposition, etc. then the surface of the material 27 is polished so that it is set at the same level as the surfaces of the electrodes 26. That is, the electrodes 26 are buried into the material 27 on the surface of the substrate 25. Then an MR element 28 and a protecting insulated layer 29 are laminated successively on the substrate 25. Thus an MR type thin film magnetic head is obtained.
