A lathe for machining the wheel-profiles of railway vehicles without removing the wheels from the vehicles comprises slides 103, 104 movable in vertical guides and each carrying a pair of driving rolls 105, 106 spaced equally on each side of the machine-axis so as to engage the wheels and centralize the axle 107. The wheels are driven from the track on to retractable rails, Fig. 1 (not shown), above the rolls 105, 106, which are rotated and are raised, as by four hydraulic jacks 108, 109, into driving engagement with the wheels, thus centring the wheels. These are then further raised so that the axle may be brought to the level of the centres of the tailstocks 110, 111. The rolls may be driven from shafts (not shown), by pulleys and gears. During machining, the wheels may be driven by the vehicle. The cutting edges of the tools (not shown) are in the central plane of the machine. |
