PURPOSE:To attain excellent reproduction independently of the carrying speed of a recording medium by changing over the gain of an amplifier in a reproduction pilot signal transmission line in the detection of a tracking error signal using a reproduced pilot signal. CONSTITUTION:When a reproduced RF signal is inputted, a 4-frequency pilot signal having a frequency component of <200kHz is extracted by a low pass filter 1, amplified by an amplifier 2, multiplied with a local pilot signal of a multiplier 6, compared with a voltage from a resistor 4 deciding the gain and the compared voltage is amplified by an amplifier 3 at a gain. In reproducing a still picture, a switch 5 is closed to decrease a voltage across the resistor 4 thereby increasing the output signal gain of the multiplier 6, and the result is inputted to a band pass filter (BPF) of the post-stage.
