(2-Nitro-5-aryloxy-phenylamino)-alkylphosphine oxide derivatives of the formula I <IMAGE> (I) wherein X is halogen, CF3, NO2, CN, CONH2 or CSNH2, Y is nitrogen or -CH=, R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, or aralkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, R2 is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, R3 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or C1-C4-alkylbenzyl, R4 and R5 independently of one another are each C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-haloalkyl, C2-C6-alkoxyalkyl, or aralkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, m is zero to 3, and n is 1 to 3, have useful herbicidal properties.
