NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 1-4C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R2 is H, 1-4C alkyl or halogen). EXAMPLE:Diisopropyl (-)-phenylthiosuccinate. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for various optically active substances, and easily convertible into optically active 3,4-epoxy-1-butanol. PREPARATION:A maleic acid ester expressed by formula II is reacted with an aryl thiol expressed by formula III in the presence of an optically active amine, e.g. cinchonine, without or in a solvent, e.g. hexane, at -20-+30 deg.C to give the aimed compound. The optically active amine is used in an amount of 0.1-5mol% based on the maleic acid ester.
