PURPOSE:To obtain ethanol in high yield and selectivity, by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a catalyst supporting Rh, Li, Ir and/or Mg, Y, V, Cr, etc. on a carrier and a catalyst supporting Ir and Fe or Mo on a carrier. CONSTITUTION:CO is reacted with H2 in the presence of (A) a catalyst supporting at least one of Rh, Li, Ir and/or Mg, Y, Yb, Lu, V and Cr on a carrier and (B) a catalyst supporting Ir and Fe or Mo on a carrier at 180-350 deg.C and 0-250kg/cm<2>G pressure to give ethanol. The carrier is preferably silica based carrier having 10-1,000m<2>/g specific surface area and >=10Angstrom pore diameter, and the ratio of the respective constituent components is as follows; 0.001-0.3 weight ratio of the Rh or Ir to the carrier, 0.001-2 atomic ratio (Li/Rh), 0.005-3 atomic ratio (Ir/Rh) and 0.05-5 atomic ratio (Fe/Ir) and 0.05-5 atomic ratio (Mo/Ir). |
