PURPOSE:To levitate stably a low rigidity material by disposing a pair of mag netic field applying means for exerting magnetic force only in the longitudinal direction of a substance. CONSTITUTION:A sheet 10 is held at a predetermined position by the use of a fork lift such that the end faces of the sheet are opposed to the magnetic field emitting surfaces of electromagnets 11a, 11b and one end face contacts the magnetic field emitting surface of one electromagnet 11a. Next, current from current sources 12a, 12b is supplied to windings 15a, 15b of the correspond ing electromagnets 11a, 11b to excite the iron cores 14a, 14b. As a result, mag netic forces act from the electromagnets 11a, 11b only in the longitudinal direc tion of the sheet 10 to provide tension pulling the sheet 10 longitudinally so that the sheet 10 without rigidity is held to levitate in air stably approximately straight without any vibration. Under this condition is removed the holding of the sheet 10 by the fork lift so that surface treatment like painting of the sheet 10 is carried out.
