PURPOSE:To make a special adding circuit, etc., unnecessary by recording an information signal and a pilot one even if they are sent in any direction and detecting the transporting direction of a magnetic tape at recording from the reproduction signal of the pilot signal. CONSTITUTION:When the magnetic tape is transported in the normal direction to record the pilot signal, pilot signals f1-f4 having four different frequencies are sequentially recorded on tracks T1-T4 sequentially formed by a rotary head. On the contrary, when the magnetic tape is transported in the reverse direction at the same speed, an inclination with respect to the longitudinal direction of the magnetic tape on each track becomes more acute, and simultaneously the order of arraying tracks T1-T4 where the pilot signals f1-f4 are recorded becomes reverse. In order to decide the transporting direction at the recording, the magnetic tape is traveled in the normal direction at a usual reproducing speed, and the transporting direction can be discriminated from the waveform of the output signal of a differential amplifier 8.
