PURPOSE:To prevent the oxidation of the surface layer of a body to be treated and the adsorption of gas on the layer and to improve the quality by coating the body with a sealant having prescribed characteristics and by carrying out the nitriding and hot hydrostatic pressing (HIP) of the body in one HIP furnace. CONSTITUTION:Powder of a metal, ceramics or a mixture thereof is compacted or sintered, and the resulting body to be treated is coated with a sealant such as aluminosilicate glass. The sealant has gas permeability at a temp. below the HIP treatment temp. and loses it at a temp. above the HIP treatment tempo. The coated body is put in an HIP furnace, where it is reacted with gaseous N2 at a temp. below the HIP treatment temp. and then heated and pressurized. |
