摘要 PURPOSE:To make the responding speed of the whole of a entire liquid crystal layer faster, by installing numerous transparent needle-like members which can be conducted with an electrode on one transparent electrode base board to the surface of the electrode under a condition where the members are projected in the direction of thickness of the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:If an AC voltage is applied across the electrodes 2a and 3a of transparent electrode base boards 2 and 3 when a liquid crystal, which is positive in dielectric anisotropy, is used as a liquid crystal 10, liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of each needle-like members 9, 9,... are quickly oriented in the voltage applying direction in the first place and the other liquid crystal molecules can also be oriented in the same direction thereafter, since the needle- like members 9, 9,... which can be conducted with the electrode 3a are erected in the electrode base board 3. Thus the responding speed of the liquid crystal molecule orientation can be made faster as a whole. Therefore, when a liquid crystal optical element 1 is formed to have a lens shape and used as a liquid crystal lens, its focal length can be variably controlled and the responding property of the liquid crystal molecule orientation is improved.
